Summer is almost over, and the back to school madness is about to begin! Schools are sending out lists of required supplies such as paper, pencils, erasers and more! While the school has a list of things that your child will need while at school, what about ideas of after school activities?
Iman Alleyne, of Kind Academy, a nature based educational program for children and their family has a few ideas of some great back to school supplies to add to your arsenal! Open ended art materials like buttons, beads, glue, feathers, oil pastels, tempera paint, and good paint brushes can really spark an incredible amount of creativity in children and is great for a unique bonding experience for the whole family. Adding nature walks to your time together is another wonderful way to create a tradition and it calms and connects our kids! Having a nature basket ready to go that includes magnifying glasses, a local field journal, and binoculars is sure to get everyone excited!
Kid’s Health highlights the many benefits of exercise for kids, pointing out that “Toddlers and preschool children should play actively several times a day…Young children should not be inactive for long periods of time — no more than 1 hour unless they’re sleeping. And school-age children should not be inactive for periods longer than 2 hours.” With all that lack of activity during the school day it is important that the family is active together!
